Chekia Collies
Puppies
We rarely have puppies.  In the more than 35 years
Chekia has been part of the Collie fancy, we have bred fewer than a dozen litters, and placed even fewer puppies.  The puppies we do place remain a part of our "extended Collie family" for a lifetime, and this is very important to all concerned.  Anyone interested in co-ownint a Chekia puppy must be prepared to be on a waiting list and to become
a lifelong "part of the family"!

Having been mentored in the Collie fancy early on by judicious breeders dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the breed and it's primary function as a mentally and structurally sound family farm dog of exquisite beauty and high intelligence  has laid the foundation for the breeding program and "family of dogs" represented here today.   As AKC Best In Show and Herding Judge, Norman Herbal once commented about our dogs,  "They are built to get around a herd of sheep!"  We don't "breed for the show ring" -- the "current fad in Collies" or "what the judges will like", but rather for the preservation of the breed as recorded in the breed's history and the Breed Standard.  While we do occasionally show our Collies and even earn conformation and working titles with them,, we do not place puppies in exclusive reference to their "show potential" but rather in consideration of their lifelong happiness.  That is always priority number one.

We employ methods of testing for serious health issues that are well established, and do not rely on "the newest methods" of biochemical tests that have proven to be founded on false conclusions and questionable relevance. (*See Articke Here)   Eye exams by the top professionals among the board certified Veterinary Ophthalmologists available to us, and hip X-rays by highly respected
experts in Veterinary Radiology are methods we employ regularly.  Pedigree research, and careful attention to understanding  the individual and genetic health of each dog in the family line is an equally important part of our health screening process.  By this method, we can, for example, tell you that all of our Collies come from an ancestry of dogs who have been diligently "test bred" to insure with 99% accuracy (the most accuracy that can
be acheived by ANY test) that their progeny and issue are clear of Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).  There is no biochemical genetic test for PRA in Collies, and even if there were, we would have every reason to distrust if's accuracy. Conversely, we have no reason to distrust the accuracy of our pedigrees.

Important to anyone considering co-owning a puppy
from Chekia is our dedication to the Natural Rearing method and protocol which includes feeding fresh raw foods; using alternative and holistic methods of health
care and parasite prevention; severely limiting vaccines in lieu of safer and more reasonable methods of disease prevention, and a strict aversion to unnecessary and unhealthful surgeries, applications of toxins, and routine implantation of foreign objects (such as RFID microchips).  Anyone who has raised multiple generations
of dogs by the NR method understands that with each
generation of Natural Rearing, the puppies become
stronger, intrinsically healthier, and naturally prone to
greater health and longevity.  Such a multi generational NR pup is a "great find" to anyone familliar with the protocol and it's superior health benefits.  This makes it very frustrating, indeed, when those who are unfamilliar, but "just want a puppy", not only don't understand, but sometimes actually become offended at being told that they MAY NOT have a puppy  if their intention is to feed "pet food", vaccinate at the will of their local vet (who has typically done NO post graduate work in immunology and more often than not is not even knowledgable as to how vaccines actually work!) and schedule routine anesthetising for such unnecessary (to an NR raised dog) things as teeth cleaning!  While we love to have people appreciate and inquire about the puppies we do occasionally have available on co-ownership agreements, we ask that you first understand and respect the fact that these multi generational NR Collies are very special indeed, and are not available to those who have no intention of following thru on this method for a lifetime.
